Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Laser Process Engineer to join our Manufacturing Engineering team. This role is responsible for the development, implementation, and optimization of advanced laser-based processes that enable next-generation power component manufacturing. The successful candidate will play a critical role in advancing product performance, enhancing packaging technologies, and ensuring robust, scalable, and cost-effective manufacturing solutions.

The Laser Process Engineer will be a key contributor to the creation of industry-leading products for diverse applications, including industrial automation, hyper scale computing, artificial intelligence, aerospace, defense, and automotive systems.

Job Description

  • Collaborate within a team environment to support the development and implementation of next-generation industrial semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
  • Work to develop advanced manufacturing capabilities and packaging processes utilizing precision laser equipment.  Will be involved with specification/development of necessary equipment, process development, qualification, scale up and production.
  • Actively identify and lead cost reduction initiatives by innovating manufacturing processes and product packaging improvements.
  • Operate and maintain laser-based materials processing systems and procedures.
  • Lead communications with laser system manufacturers to identify and evaluate emerging technologies for integration into Vicor’s manufacturing operations.
  • Perform experimental investigations to examine and characterize fundamental physical phenomena in laser-assisted material processing.
  • Implement and manage real time SPC and utilize Six Sigma tools such as PFMEAs to implement meaningful process controls.
  • Communicate with NPI / Design team to suggest approach in favor of better yield.
  • Supports the organizational goal of Automotive Readiness in preparation for IATF 16949 Certification.
  • Monitor line yield and scrap short term and long-term issues and working with operators, supervisors, line technicians, design engineers, test engineers, and quality Troubleshoots laser systems, as well as analyzing process performance and recommending improvements.

Education / Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of experience, in Physics, Applied Physics, Optics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
  • Track record of problem-solving in both R&D and high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in statistical methods (DOE, SPC, FMEA) and data analysis tools (e.g., JMP, Minitab, MATLAB, Python, SQL).
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of laser-material interaction (e.g., ablation, melting, surface structuring, multi-photon absorption, thermal effects).
  • Strong hands-on skills in designing and conducting laser processing experiments and analyzing results.
  • Proven experience with laser process development and recipe optimization (e.g., trench geometry, minimizing heat-affected zone).
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CircuitCAM) and laser programming software.
  • Knowledge of laser safety regulations and procedures.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and adapt in a high-paced environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in material science or engineering is preferred.
  • 5 years of industry experience in laser applications, process development, or laser-based manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in optical system design, including beam delivery, beam shaping, and focusing.
  • Experience with laser scanners and scanner-based processing.
  • Strong foundation in laser physics and optics.
  • Background in analytical or numerical simulation of laser-material interactions or optical systems.
  • Familiarity with laser micromachining applications such as surface texturing, thin-film removal, and micro-drilling.

Compensation Data

Salary Range:

$100,000 - $140,000

Please note: This range is based on our current market driven pay structures. Individual salaries are determined based upon a variety of factors including but not limited to, a candidates overall qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience as well as company internal equity.
